Tombak

Ottoman tombak is a technique for gilding metal objects (primarily copper, but also bronze and silver) with gold leaf. The object was heated before applying the gold leaf, or mercury was used in one step of the gilding process: after the surface of the object was cleaned, a mixture of gold and mercury was applied and then the object was heated, causing the mercury to evaporate.
