TERRA SIGILLATA – The Arretine ware (from Arretium, northern Etruria, now Arezzo, Italy) produced in the first century BCE was modelled on Anatolian relief ceramics. The direct successor of this production was the popular terra sigillata. From the mid-first century CE, ceramic workshops moved from Italy and gradually into Gaul, the Rhineland, the Danube River basin, the British Isles, and Africa. Throughout this stage of development, Eastern sigillata was predominant along the Anatolian coast, from where it was often exported to the northern Black Sea coast. The fine ware is strongly represented in the Pilsen collection by a wide variety of forms. (DB)
