The SKYPHOS was the most popular type of large wine cup, its cone-shaped form narrowing down to a low base. Various types of skyphoi differ in how the handles are attached. Bell, horseshoe or triangular handles are usually set on the bowl either almost horizontally, or one is vertical and the other horizontal. A clue to the immense popularity of the vessel can be seen in its other name: kotyle (Latin cotula or cotyla, a small cup), which is a liquid measure equivalent to about a half pint. (DB)
