HIRAMAKI-E (“flat” maki-e) – Introduced in the Kamakura period (1185–1333), the technique involves sprinkling metal powder directly on a soft lacquered surface in a very low relief so that only the thickness of the final protective lacquer coating is raised above the surface. (JMl)
