FRITWARE – A type of pottery known in Egypt since the 12th century, fritware contains a small amount of clay, a high proportion of quartz, and about ten percent glass frit. The material was used to produce ceramics in Syria, Iran, and Turkey; Turkish pottery from İznik also contained lead. (JMl)
