CLOISONNÉ

Cloisonné is a technique that involves creating small compartments (French cloisons) from bent metal strips, usually copper or copper alloy, which are mounted (adhered or welded) to the surface. These compartments are then filled with coloured vitreous paste (enamel). The object is then fired (usually several times), and when cooled the surface is cleaned and polished. The surface of the copper edges and the compartments are usually gilt. (JMl)
