EGER (Cheb)

Eger was a major mediaeval centre for trade, arts, and crafts, with trade focusing on tin from the nearby Kaiserwald (Slavkov Forest). An independent pewterers’ guild was established in Eger in 1710. Local pewterers crafted objects into fashionable period styles and shapes up until the late nineteenth century; after the 1850s, Eger produced numerous pewter pieces in Revival styles. The Wildeners were an important family of pewterers. (JMl)
