KHATAM-KARI – is an inlay technique that creates a mosaic by combining variously coloured woods, bone, and metal wire (usually brass, gold, or silver). Thin triangular rods composed of these materials are wound with a thin wire or wrapped with thin metal sheet and glued together to form a circle, which is again wrapped with thin metal sheet to form a cylinder. Thin rounds are cut from the cylinder and adhered onto the surface until the desired design is formed. The surface is then smoothed and lacquered. This technique was used to decorate small pieces of furniture as well as entire interiors, and was often combined with lacquer painting. (JMl)
